  Providing Solutions for Water Challenges under Technology Mission: WAR for Water in Rupaichari Cluster, South Tripura District, Tripura State

With the assistance from Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (VHAT) has been executing the project “Providing Solutions for Water Challenges under Technology Mission: WAR for Water in Rupaichari Cluster, South Tripura District, Tripura State”, in six rural villages of Rupaichari RD Block since December 2011 .

The objectives of the project:
i. To provide drinking water facilities to the hill top tribal dwellers
ii. To reduce to dependency of the hill top tribal dwellers on the underground water
iii. To use the rain water for different domestic purposes

The interventions of the project :
Ring Well :

Total 35 Ring Wells were constructed as per the project plan. All the water sources are now in the operation mode and supporting the hill top dwellers to cater their demand of water.

Rain Water Harvesting Tank (Type – A)
To preserve the rain water and utilize during the grave situation is the prime intention of Rain Water Harvesting Tank. 22 (twenty two) such tanks were created in the project villages to facilitate the necessities of drinking water for the people of the cluster covered by each of the rain water harvesting tanks. In this case the rain water is collected from the roofs made by tins, preserved in tanks after filtration, which can be used as safe drinking water.

Surface Rain Water Tank (Type – B)
By construction of surface rain water catchment area huge rain water can be collected and transferred to the tanks through filtration and purification mechanism. This water can directly be used by the community as safe drinking water. Already four such type B rain water harvesting tanks have been developed as planned by the project.

Community participation:
Community Meeting: For the successful implementation of the project regular meeting of the community was conducted. During the meeting the maintenance of water sources, proper water collection strategies by the local people had been discussed.
War for Water Committee: The beneficiaries of each of the drinking water device formed War for Water committee consisting of one member from each beneficiary family. The committee to open bank accounts in nearby banks and depositing money collected from the beneficiary families at the rate of Rs. 20 from each family per month.
This fund thus created will be supporting the repairing and other maintenance of the constructions to get sustained benefit.

Monitoring and Evaluation :
The monitoring and Evaluation is the integral part of the project. VHAT has done the regular monitoring of the project. During the visit, team discussed with the beneficiaries about their expectation and suggestion of the activities. The on-site supervision was also carried out by the technical personnel.
